A Compassionate Nonprofit Organization for Animals

We are a limited space (no kill) shelter providing homes to adoptable cats and dogs, educating the public in the care and prevention of unwanted animals.

The determination, dedication, money, and lots of hard work by many people and businesses through the years, have resulted in a better life for more than 6,000 cats, kittens, dogs, and puppies.

We are 100% funded by private donations from the public (we receive no government money).

When our shelter resident cats or dogs need veterinary services (spay/neuter/medical diagnosis & treatment) we outsource that care to local Veterinary Clinics in our surrounding area. Money from cash donations and pet adoption fees are used to pay for this care. We have no on-site veterinary care.

Then...

The organization was established in 1984 as a not-for-profit shelter under the name of Live Oak/Suwannee County Humane Society. For the first ten years volunteers worked out of their homes.

In 1996 we acquired our first shelter building on North Houston Street, Live Oak, FL.

NOW...

As the shelter expanded and needed more space to house the many homeless animals, we purchased affordable property in Lee, FL and renovated an old greyhound site in April of 2002 and opened our doors at the present shelter on July 16, 2002.

As we are currently servicing five counties: Suwannee, Hamilton, Lafayette, Madison, and Columbia, we changed our name to Suwannee Valley Humane Society in July of 2002. We are privately funded through donations, on-site thrift stores, and fund-raising events.

All are welcome to visit during regular hours to view the current shelter and see its potential for growth, our healthy adorable animals, their comfortable shelter home, and their general wellbeing.

COVID 19: You Can’t Shut Down Compassion

Our area needs help now more than ever, and we haven't taken a break from helping animals in need. All the animals are being cared for daily and their areas are cleaned as always. We are asking that visitors and adopters follow all of the state and federal recommendations to halt the spread of COVID-19.
